Untitled Experiment

Oil on canvas, 8 x 12 inch

This was an experimental piece I made by painting thick impasto marks on other canvases and pressing them together. I let each layer partially dry before adding another layer in order to keep the painting from becoming too muddy. I added around seven layers in total and then went in with a dry sea sponge to emphasise the textures, caused from pulling the canvases apart.
I really like this way of working, because even with the unpredictability, I was able able to create a dynamic composition that allows the colours from earlier presses to peek through the background. Examples of this are the pink tone in the bottom right corner and the yellow tones creating a focal point in the centre of the painting.
