Souls of The Little Men
16 x 8.5 inch
Raku clay with indigo glaze and chinoko glaze, fired in oxidation kiln to 1260°
This sculpture is a development of “Lewis’ Columns”. The base of both is similar, however I wanted this piece to be a bit sillier, incorporating my “little men”. The figures attempt to look fairly ghoulish and ghostlike, appearing as if they are trying to escape the Vessel. This was inspired by The Sea of Souls that Hades guarded in Greek mythology.
When glazing this piece my intention was to create a textured appearance by layering chinoko glaze over the indigo glaze that I sprayed on. The chinoko wasn’t thick enough comparatively, resulting in a flatter blue colour all over the piece. This is not necessarily a bad thing, however I feel this piece would’ve benefited from having a wider variety of colours.
