Pastels

Within my pastel works I engage with themes of memory and retrospective events, attempting to present the idea that as we age our recollections fade and become distorted by our egos. I personally feel as though my memories cannot always be trusted as there is evidence to suggest its susceptibility to biases and inadvertent fabrication. Oil and chalk pastels are my chosen media for these themes as they allow me to create dream-like scenes through my scribbled linework, facilitated by my deliberate utilisation of gestural linework to imbue compositions with a sense of fluidity akin to the elusive nature of memory. The omission of intricate details, particularly in the background, attempts to emphasise the inherent limitations in my capacity to fully remember specific details of past experiences.

While the depicted figures are portrayals of my friends and I, there is an element of ambiguity in the way I present them, thereby eschewing recognizable characteristics in favour of fostering a universal resonance. I seek to garner a sense of relatability, inviting viewers to project themselves into the depicted scenarios. Consequently, my works prioritise the evocation of implicit narratives, rather than explicit narratives, emphasising the significance of collective engagement with the depicted scenes over the specifics of their content.
