Marcie Gaming
Oil on canvas, 12 x 16 inch
This piece shows my friend Marcie playing video games with me. The work attempts to replicate the immediate gratification of spending quality time with friends, shown via the glowing yellow shades pushing through the piece to create a warm, comforting feeling, which contrasts the deep cool toned blues that were meant to add a colder, harsh element, due to the nature of the shooter games we play. The speed at which I painted my marks is reminiscent of the adrenaline and euphoria shooting games can cause players to feel. This has been interpreted by some as a comment on society's acceptance of violence in video games, however this was not my intention.
The painting also continues onto the sides of the canvas - visible in image 1 - however instead of continuing the painting I used a dark ultramarine colour to frame it. I prefer the look of the first two pieces as it feels more cohesive with the painting itself and less of a last minute decision.
