First Birthday

Oil on canvas, 11.8 x 16.5 inch

This painting depicts my mum, sister, and I at my second cousin Aurora’s first birthday party. The bright colours, inspired by ‘New Year’s Shuffle’ attempt to capture the childlike whimsy of parties and celebrations through her perspective as children see colours more vividly. The pink and purple tones are references to Auroras favourite colours and the yellow was inspired by the ‘Winnie the Pooh’ decorations.
I decided to keep all the figures the same colours as an attempt to keep the piece cohesive, dissimilar to ‘New Years Shuffle’ and I feel like it worked a lot better. The quality of the marks I used to paint the figures was loosely inspired by Mark Carson English’s ‘An Evening Out with Friends’.
