Eruption
H12 x W6 x L11 inch
Raku clay, with chinoko glaze and custom glaze 1, fired in oxidation kiln to 1260°
This sculpture is an extension of ‘Souls of The Little Men’. I really appreciated the ghostly look of the figures, causing the urge to further experiment with the possibilities of them.
With this piece I wanted to take a slightly less organised approach, attempting to create the appearance of two mountains, loosely inspired by Mount Olympus. By using a similar technique to create texture that I used in ‘Lewis’ Columns’, I was able to create the appearance of rocks that a mountain range would possess, without being too intricate or realistic about it.
Glazing this piece was very fun and I feel the overall effect turned out perfectly as planned. By layering my custom glaze 1 over the chinoko glaze I was able to emphasise the rough texture of the sculpture, adding to the natural rock-like elements the clay exudes. When glaze testing the combination of chinoko glaze and custom glaze 1 created more blue tones within the dark umber shade, however this didn’t show through on a larger scale.
