Emotionally Void

Oil on canvas, 12 x 12 inch

This is a self portrait, depicting the inability to regulate emotions and therefore shutting them off.
It was made following the creation of 'Lost in Self' and embodies a very similar set of emotions, or lack thereof. In this piece I attempted to tackle the emotional numbness I was feeling due to poor mental health at the time. I attempted to capture this somewhat sinking feeling with the softer blending of paint squeezed directly onto the canvas. The pale pinks are the focal point of the painting, representing me being almost pulled apart mentally.
I added the swirls in the bottom left corner in a triangular shape in an attempt to add more dynamic marks, as the piece felt quite monotonous to paint. The swirls in my previous two works feel fluid and lively, which I didn't feel was right for this piece and therefore lead me to stipple over them slightly to distort the curves.
