Corvid Summer

Oil on canvas, 12 x 16 inch

It was the middle of winter when I painted this piece and I was reflecting on how I felt about the cold weather. Less abstract than my usual painting style, this piece depicts the impressions of two crows dancing in the summer heat of my garden; a memory from last summer. My use of the warmer oranges and yellows in the background, as opposed to a typical blue sky, was an attempt to replicate the radiance of the sun and the lively atmosphere associated with summer.
The painting continues on the sides of the canvas - visible in image 1 - as I like to make use of the entire canvas and leaving the sides blank feels unfinished to me. This technique got very good responses from people in our group crits and I think it works well.
